Is your home running smoothly? What are the areas that feel bumpy? A simple rule of thumb here at our home that I know something needs to be changed is if something just doesnโ€™t feel good or right. It usually means something needs to change. Today on the blog, Iโ€™m sharing with you four ways to create a simpler home.

1. Only have what is used or loved. Declutter the rest.

We have four kids here and any excess is really noticeable. It takes longer for us to tidy up and care for our things! Having less creates simpler days for us.

2. Reassess routines that no longer feel good.

If itโ€™s becoming too much of an effort to push the routine or just feels โ€œoffโ€, it may be time to switch it up. For instance:

I created a flexible cleaning, tidying routine in the winter and it worked so, so well for us. But come the summer and it only ended up exhausting me and not working for us so we switched things up for the season. We switched to a periodic, as needed cleaning and tidying routine with some basics that are done daily instead.

So many times Iโ€™d push, push, push in the past when something didnโ€™t feel good. I was on autopilot in those moments and not thinking!

3. Reassess systems that could be streamlined more.

If a system is never caught up with, then itโ€™s time to rework it. Iโ€™m thinking particularly about our laundry system here. In the past, I used to think that I had to fold and have everything put away or laundry wasnโ€™t done. Instead, I reworked it so that laundry could be done at a slower, more sustainable pace that didnโ€™t always involve having things โ€œput awayโ€. Read about our routine here.

4. Get everyone on board little by little.

Working together reduces the load for the whole house. This one is so key for us here with six people and my dad. Many hands make light work!

PS if youโ€™re on the journey to create a simpler home too, I applaud you. Itโ€™s a lot of work. And even still for us with a few years behind us. An overview of the blog tips and an image of a minimalist kitchen.

Hi, Iโ€™m Kelly! Iโ€™m a mother of four children - three boys, one toddler girl - and our family lives on the beautiful east coast of Canada. Iโ€™m a past elementary teacher, turned stay at home, work at home mom eight years ago after I had my second child. Iโ€™ve found that the busier Iโ€™ve become and as my children age, that itโ€™s become even more important to figure out what is most important to me and us as a family. Living a simpler lifestyle has helped us in so many ways in our home life - from better routines to faster tidying up times. It has been through my children that I have been inspired to learn how to effectively manage my time and to simplify in all areas of my home and life. I enjoy helping busy moms simplify home life by teaching flexible planning methods and skills. Enjoyed this blog and think it would be helpful to others? I'd love if you shared it. Thank you!
